Nomboniso Gasa is a researcher, analyst and public speaker. Her work weaves academic, lived experience and constant engagement with contemporary and historical South African issues. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Law and Society, University of Cape Town. Gasa has conducted research over 19 years on culture, gender, sexuality, identity and the broader issues of political transformation and democratization.She has published in scholarly, commercial and other publications and has extensive experience as a media commentator and analyst. She has held numerous public and professional positions, including at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (I-IDEA). She headed I-IDEA’s Sub-Sahara office in Nigeria, where she conceptualized the research program and public engagement in Nigeria. Democracy in Nigeria: Continuing Dialogues for Nation – Building, a historical and analytical overview of the Nigerian question was published by I-IDEA in 2000. Nomboniso Gasa has been a political activist since her teenage years, which led to her first detention without trial and torture at the age of 14 in the former Transkei.
